Course Overview: The Authority of Sunnah

Overview: This course provides a strong foundation in the science of Hadith by discussing the meaning and importance of the Sunnah of the Prophet (S). The course work will provide students with a fundamental understanding of the status of Sunnah in the Islamic legal model. The text that will be used is entitled “The Authority and Importance of The Sunnah In Islam” written by Shaykh Jamaal al Din Zarabozo. Students will learn, among other topics, the following:

· The difference between Hadith and Sunnah

· The definition of Sunnah according to the jurists, scholars of hadith, scholars of Usul Al-Fiqh, and scholars of Aqeedah

· Evidences for the Authority of Sunnah in the Islamic Legal model

· The Sunnah’s relationship with the Quran

· Status of those who reject the authority of the Sunnah in Islam

· How to implement the Sunnah in one’s life.

Course Objectives: upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an ability to differentiate between Hadith and Sunnah
  • Demonstrate an ability to articulate the different meanings of Sunnah according to the different science of Islamic Knowledge
  • Demonstrate firm knowledge of the evidences demonstrating the Authority of the Sunnah in the Islamic Legal model.
  • Understand the relationship between the Quran and the Sunnah.
  • Implement the principles of Sunnah in one’s own life.

Course Text: “The Authority and Importance of the Sunnah” by Shaykh Jamaal al Din Zarabozo. Book Outline

Examinations and Course Credit: A final exam will be provided to the students. Upon passing the final examination with minimum acceptable grade of 70%, the student will attain course credit.
