Quranic Arabic Program Overview

Overview:
Islamic Learning Foundation is excited to present to you our new One Year Part-Time Quranic Arabic Program.  This curriculum has been developed after years of deliberation and consultation with our instructors and resident scholars.  The diverse academic backgrounds of our instructors has allowed us to develop a curriculum that is efficient and unique in approaching the classical Arabic language with an emphasis on understanding the divine revelation.

The program takes you through three semesters specially organized to maximize your learning potential in the shortest amount of time.  This is done by focusing primarily on reading and listening skills, which are fundamentally required for understanding Quran, Hadith and Islamic literature.  Thus, a solid foundation for more advanced studies will be built for the student.

The special emphasis of our program is on vocabulary development with practical grammar and morphology.  The study of grammar and morphology can be very tedious for a student.  With this in mind, we set out to teach the concepts of grammar and morphology with simple language and with an emphasis on practical implementation.

Each semester will be 15 weeks long, which will include 4 hours of instructional time each week.  Students will be provided with assignments requiring practice and review outside of class to solidify the concepts learned.  Each semester will have a unique focus that integrate concept with application.  Each semester will be summarized below.

Two matriculating classes will be started each June and will continue through the course until completion the following year.  This allows continuity of education and experience with the instructors of ILF.  Inshallah, students will have the complete attention of their instructor and help will be available outside of class for anyone requiring it.  This system shall allow students to grow at a comfortable pace, and allows teachers to address specific problem areas for each individual student.  This will, inshallah, allow the class to grow together throughout the year.

Summary of Semesters:

Semester One: This semester lays the foundations for grammar and morphology in simple language that is focused on practical concepts.  This semester is more dense with the technical components of the language.  This is required, however, to allow the student to focus on vocabulary development thereafter.  The student will study our very own text entitled “Revelation Revealed: Access to Quranic Arabic.”  After covering a few chapters of the text, the student will begin reading a basic Arabic book entitled “Qasas al Nabiyyeen” (Stories of the Prophets, 5 parts) which is the staple reading text for our program.  The students will complete our grammar and morphology text as well as part 1 of Qasas.  The student will have learned approximately 60-70% of Quranic vocabulary following this semester alone.

Semester Two: Since the key principles of grammar and morphology were covered in semester one, this semester will be complete application of those principles through reading.  This will allow the students to internalize the principles of grammar and morphology with ease while building their vocabulary.  They will also have command of the methodology for reading while using a dictionary.  By the end of this semester, students will have sufficient practice to be able to approach other Arabic texts independently, utilizing the skills they learned in class.  Parts 2-4 of Qasas will be covered.  At this stage, students will also be introduced to Surahs of the Quran that are predominantly story-based such as Surah Yusuf.  The student, therefore, will have practice with reading and understanding Quranic verses.

Semester Three: In this semester the students will continue reading Qasas as homework assignments.  They will be asked to write the translation of the assigned readings and present them to the teacher for correction.  While in class, the students will continue to cover selected chapters of the Quran.  Similarly, students will begin reading selections of arabic texts covering a variety of subjects in Islamic studies including Seerah, Usul ul Fiqh, Fiqh, Aqeedah, Hadith and others.

Examinations:
There will be a mid-term and final exam for each semester.  The details of the exams will be provided to the students during class.  Study sessions will be organized periodically throughout the semesters and will allow students more time to interact with the instructors and/or teacher’s assistants.  At the end of the year, a final comprehensive exam will be provided to test the knowledge and skills of students regarding all the material covered.  A special emphasis will be on the ability to translate material that has been read in class.

Certification:  Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive a special certification from Islamic Learning Foundation.  Currently, ILF is in discussion with various notable Islamic institutions, scholars, and universities to obtain accreditation.  We will notify students when progress has been made in this regard.

May Allah reward you and bless you with the ability to understand and implement the teachings of His Guidance. Ameen.
